Badges, pins and stickers are the current must-have rage in the social media space. Foursquare wasn't the first web site to offer incentives for participating or playing the game; however, they have made it an art form, setting the standard for others to follow.
The idea is quite simple:
- register for an account
- follow people
- download the app to your mobile device
- leave your house
- check-in when you get somewhere
It is the act of checking-in that generates receipt of the various badges, pins or stickers (rewards). It can be the number of times you check-in, the variety of places or the uniqueness of where you check-in that gets you a reward. Something to keep in mind, these rewards are virtual; they have no monetary value.*+
This begs the question, why has this become the rage? Why are people intent on earning virtual rewards? There has to be more to it than "badges look cool," as someone once tweeted.
Over the last several months, as the check-in craze has become a regular part of the social media space, I've made the following observations:
- people really want rewards, even if only virtual
- people will change their behavior to earn them
- people want their friends to know when a reward is earned
- people will cheat to win rewards
- and, people like the perceived status of having them
What do the rewards mean to you?
How far would you go or have gone to earn a reward?
